Here is a before and after:

I had a lady contact me and ask me if I could make a matching headboard to go with it and refinish a dresser that she currently had to make a matching set for her little girl. I began scouring CL for twin headboards and it must've been my lucky day because I found the PERFECT one.

Guess where? The FREE section!! OMG I couldn't believe it. I immediately contacted them and arranged a pick up for the next day. I thought it was awesome already, but I had to make it match. So I sanded, primed and painted it to match the nightstand. Here it is after:

and here it is as a matching set:

When she came to pick them up she dropped off her darling 3 drawer dresser for me to paint to match. It was so cute that I wanted to keep it for myself ;)

And here are a couple of after shots:
I just love it and she seemed to love it too which made my day.
She asked me if I could paint it so I was like "sure, can I do whatever I want to it?" And she said yes! Yipee. I wasn't sure what I was going to do- just like always when I start a project. I sanded it, primed it and painted it blue. Then I decided it needed something else so I put a white border around the edges. Still not enough. I had been wanting to try a harlequin pattern so I figured now was a good time to try it out since I didn't have to worry about trying to sell it. I didn't have a pattern so I cut out a little diamond shape and then traced them- one by one- onto the table. Very time consuming. I'm sure there is a much easier way, but I tend to make things difficult. Needless to say, the pattern isn't perfect, but I'm satisfied with it for being my first attempt. Afterwards I distressed and antiqued it with a stain rubdown. Here is a before:

Yeah, I'm a little photo challenged. I actually have a really nice camera that I'm sure can do some really amazing things, but I have no attention span and I can't get past the first page of an instruction manual. I tried to use Picasa too, but it just ended up annoying me, so now I'm just using the plain ol' straight from the camera shots. I wish I could have some awesome photographer come take the pics for me. I'm terrible at staging too, but here are some after shots:
She isn't into the whole distressed french country cottage shabby chic look at all. Not sure how it is going to fit into her modern look, but I had fun and I'm glad that she gave me free rein. Thanks for looking!!
So my new favorite piece is a trunk that I found at my local thrift store for $35. I had no idea what I was going to do with it. As a matter of fact, it sat in my garage for a good 2 months before I even touched it. Anyway, I had been looking for a trunk type thing to be my coffee table because we always like to have blankets on the couch and I like to have a place to put them away once we're finished with them. I had looked and looked and finally given up and refinished myself a different type of table and was pretty much satisfied with it. Until I finished this trunk. I just new I couldn't sell it because it belonged in my living room holding my blankets! So now I've got my old refinished coffee table for sale on CL. Here is a before picture of it when I brought it home.
I decided that I wanted to go with a salmon color so I painted the entire thing with that color. Then I wasn't really feelin' it (does that ever happen to you?) So I knew I wanted to mute the color and I couldn't make up my mind on what color I wanted on the top because I thought it would look too plain to all be the same color. That is when I decided to use the Martha Stewart paint samples that I got from Home Depot. All colors for $4! What a steal! Only they wouldn't ship to Hawaii :( go figure! So I sent out a FB plea asking if anyone would be willing to order these for me and then mail them to me in Hawaii. Luckily, a great friend and my Dad came through for me and I got 2 sets!<3. Anyway...back to the subject. After I painted all of the squares I dry brushed on some separate colors on top followed by a streaky stain treatment. NOW I was feelin' it!! lol. It sure does add a punch of color to my living room. I knew it would. And my blankets now have a new home :)
Who can't use frames? It doesn't matter how ugly or dirty they are, they can always be cleaned and painted. I've been searching for some oval ones, but I never find those. I do, however, find a lot of 5x7, 8x10, and even bigger. Well, of course I don't have any before pictures, but here are the afters:

My local (overpriced, but only) thrift store usually has these priced at 3-4 dollars. Sometimes, I see 8x10's there for $10! Needless to say, I quickly put them down and keep looking. I don't know who prices their stuff, but they need to recognize!! lol. Thanks for looking.Daynahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12045555328279581255noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4455904842340398779.post-15113989701095613022010-12-02T04:29:00.000-08:002010-12-03T13:45:56.361-08:00Red~red~redCute little coffee table that I got at the Salvation Army for about $30. A little plain, but it was wood and it was in my price range (you like that criteria?). I never know what color I'm going to paint a piece until I actually get to work on it. I usually sand and prime in one day and then come back another day to paint (hence the long time in between posts). So I decided that it was going to be red with just a tad bit of distressing because it feels like I've been doing a lot of distressing on my pieces so far. Not sure how popular that is here in Hawaii. I've listed 2 things I've painted on Craigslist so far and only one has sold. It was the cheval mirror for $70. I was so excited! It was mine, but I got a new bedroom suite and it no longer had a home in my bedroom so it was basically free. Oh, back to the coffee table...I decided on red with a black border. Afterwards, when I stood back to check it out, it kinda gave off an Asian feel. I haven't taken any staged pictures to put on Craigslist yet (because I still don't know what to ask for it- any suggestions?) but here are some pics from my garage at night.
After the black dried I sanded it back ever so slightly to reveal a touch of red in various spots then I dry brushed on some black glaze.
I finally scored last week at the thrift store! I got 3 pieces that are currently waiting patiently in my garage for their makeover and they were all about $20 each. Here is a little sneak peak. I (kinda) remembered to take before pictures!!! I just LOVE this first one! It's so darling with its raised wood carving and the drop pulls. I hope it's as pretty afterwards as it is in my mind!

Kinda started priming a little. There was a little boo boo on the bottom left that I am trying to bandage up with some wood filler. Here is a close up of it.

This chest thing is interesting. I was excited to find it. It had cute little feet. It looks homemade, but that's ok. The only problem was when I looked inside...

and found this. It's lined with like shelf paper, or wall paper or something. Rather vintage feeling, but I still don't like the way it looks. Not sure what I'm going to do with the inside yet. Suggestions?

Here is piece number 3. Rather plain, but I think I can spruce it up a bit. I plan to swap out the legs with something long and chubby and then add some pulls to the drawers. It also had some minor injuries on the front edges, but nothing too serious. Here you can see my wood filler already working on it.

And that's it. I have a couple more finished products in my garage, but they are awaiting the "right" hardware. You know like - when you see it you'll know. Till next time...
I'm fixing to list it on CL and hope that it sells. I also took more picsof the table, it's not the same color, but it looks similar. I'm not good at the before and during pics, but here is what I did. It was an orangey oak color. It was mine, so it was free :) I sanded the old finish off by hand and afterwards primed it. The next day I painted all of the edges in a brown paint and later that night I sanded again. The next day (yes, I rarely finish anything quickly) I painted it with the blue color and once that was dry I sanded the edges just enough to let the brown show through. Once that was finished I used a little bit of gel stain to give it an aged appearance. The following day (smile) I gave it a handrubbed wax with Minwax Paste Wax and finally I was done! That didn't take me long, now did it?

We have this one skinny end table that we have on one side of the couch, but my husband and I always fight over who gets to sit by the table (for our drink). I was in the thrift store and I saw this fairly skinny table that would work, but it was $30! Ugghh, stupid over priced thrift store!! At least I get a military discount though :) So I got it home and worked on it and now we have an end table on both sides of the couch. Yay. Here is a before pic:
I usually realize it in the middle of a project and run and get the camera, but it isn't the same :( Anyways, the other day I was strolling through the thrift store (my new obsession) and I found some things...ummm not too sure what they were supposed to be exactly, but I liked their shape. They had lots of character, so I snatched them up. When I got home I covered them with some of that stuff that you use to fill holes. You know what I'm talking about, right? After it dried I sanded them a little bit. I wish I would've taken before pictures, but I only remembered after I had
put on the nail hole stuff. So, here are a few pics:

This one I actually bought at Ross for $5bucks, but it was a little bland...
It was very time consuming, but I'm all about the outcome and the outcome this time is good! Here is my before picture (I'm not so great at picture taking, but ADD prevents me from reading instruction manuals- or tutorials for that matter)! So, here is my stairway before and after:
Ugly mismatched frames:
Have a great Friday! P.S. Anyone know why I have the huge gap of empty space at the top of this post? When I try to edit the post there isn't a big gap like that. I'm still new at all of this ;)
I notice that many of you "stage" your items for pictures. I've taken all of my pics in my garage and it isn't very pretty. Not to mention the fact that I'm no good at picture taking anyway. So I'm wondering, do ya'll drag the pieces into your own house to take pictures of them to post to sell? What if it's a big heavy item, say a dresser, and your bedroom is upstairs? And also, the color of the walls don't really coordinate with the piece being pictured? What do you do? All of my bedrooms are upstairs and every room in my house is painted a different color. I'll be back soon with my latest.Daynahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12045555328279581255noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4455904842340398779.post-51318118284224915642010-11-02T12:26:00.000-07:002010-11-02T12:26:27.736-07:00Advice for a newbie?I am amazed at all of the finds that I see on everyone's blogs. AND so cheap! Like an amazing buffet table for $30 or an ornate dresser for $15! Granted, they need some work, but still they are great finds! I search Craigslist and thrift stores and can't find anything like that. Am I looking in the wrong place? I go to garage sales, but we don't have any flea markets or anything like that in Hawaii. IF I do find something that would look awesome refinished they want like $80 for it, and that's on the low side. Usually its over $100 and I just can't afford to fork out that kind of money plus to resell it I would have to charge a fortune to make a profit and I don't see that happening. What gives? Any advice? Thanks in advance!Daynahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12045555328279581255noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4455904842340398779.post-71714267179638786952010-11-01T13:37:00.000-07:002010-11-01T13:37:33.848-07:00Linking up?I'm still trying to figure out how to link back up to other blogs via their button. I've figured out how to link their blog to mine, but haven't figured out how to get their button onto mine. If I've linked up to you and you don't see your button that is why. Not as cheap as I would've liked, but cheap enough to be my first "for sale" project. I picked out a cool blue for the color. It's the same paint that I used in my old living room so it was free. Free paint is the best paint! Here it is after I painted, sanded, glazed and waxed it.
I would've loved it in my old living room where it would've matched. I plan to post it on Craigslist today and hope (fingers crossed) that I can sell it. It would be my first sale! If I could make money pursuing a hobby, well, that would be slightly WONDERFUL! Not sure how much to ask for it though. I don't want to ask too much.
I drove around the 'hood hoping to find some good stuff like all of the people on my blog list do. No such luck, but I did find this wooden shelf that I'm sure I can do something cute with. So it wasn't a total loss. Glad I could save it from the dump!Daynahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12045555328279581255noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4455904842340398779.post-26319354612216649062010-10-31T03:05:00.000-07:002010-10-31T03:05:58.924-07:00My tiny end table needed some sprucing up...

I love this little end table, but unfortunately it had some water damage to it. I decided to tape it off and get to work antiquing it. I used 2 different paint colors and then distressed it with some stain. I like the way it turned out. Finished it off with 2 coats of poly and now she's good to go!!
I don't know what it was or is supposed to be, but I thought it would make a perfect chalk board for my pantry door. I got it home and gave it a little TLC and now it's my perfect little chalkboard. I love it!
I found a coffee table at our local thrift store that I thought could use a little fixin' up. I didn't like the price
though- $40! Even the thrift stores in Hawaii are expensive. They are way overpriced, but I guess they can afford to be that way since they have no competition. I've never seen anything in there under $4.00. Anyway, back to the coffee table. I wish I had taken better before pictures, but this will have to do. I was eager to get started. I sanded and primed. I learned some lessons, but then again that is the point- right? I decided to stain the top and paint the rest. I kept the original hardware, but spray painted it with ORB. Here she is first in the garage, then in her new home (my living room).
I've been stalking them daily with great anticipation to see what creations they've come up with overnight. I realize that their creations aren't exactly created in one night, but that is the way it seems in bloggerland. So every morning after I take my kids to school, I find a cozy spot and curl up with my laptop and a Red Bull. It's become a ritual. Start from the bottom and work my way up. You can see a list of them on the right under My Blog List. I should warn you though that you might end up an addict like me. A blog addict, that is. From reading their blogs I've been inspired to turn my own trash into treasure. Hence, the blog and the title. I look forward to this adventure and I hope that I can sell some of my creations in the future. Here goes nothing...Daynahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12045555328279581255noreply@blogger.com0
